摘要

在线翻译工具对翻译活动有一定的辅助作用，然而目前对于如何选择并利用在线翻译工具来提高译文质量的研究却比较少。本文旨在评估两款在线翻译工具—谷歌翻译和雅虎宝贝鱼翻译的翻译质量。

作者从新闻文稿、科技文摘以及文学作品中节选出三段长度适中的英语段落，通过上述两款翻译工具进行在线翻译，并根据忠实和通顺两项原则，分别对这两款在线翻译工具的翻译质量进行对比研究。

结果发现，从文体来看，两款在线翻译工具对科技文献的翻译质量最高，对文学作品的翻译质量次之，对新闻文稿的翻译质量最差。

然而在翻译不同文体文章的过程中，两款在线翻译工具的翻译质量也有明显差别。总体来说，谷歌在线翻译的翻译质量要高于雅虎宝贝鱼的翻译质量。无论在新闻素材，科技文章还是文学作品的翻译中，谷歌在线翻译提供的译文能全面覆盖原文所要传达的信息，翻译中不存在漏译现象，而且表达较为通顺。比较而言，雅虎宝贝鱼在线翻译提供的译文不能完全涵盖文章内容，对不常见的词，短语以及术语无法提供相应的中文翻译，多处存在漏译现象，且多处用词不符合中文语言习惯。

这些发现对于在线翻译工具的选用具有一定意义。

Abstract

Online translation tools play a supplementary role in the translation practice. However, the researches on how to choose and utilize the online translation tools to improve the quality of the translation output are rare. This paper aims to evaluate the translation of two online translation tools -- Google Translate and Babel Fish Translate.

The author selects three English extracts of moderate length from a news item, a science article and a literature work, and have them translated by the two online translation tools. Then the author makes a comparison between the two online translation outputs respectively according to the two criteria -- faithfulness and fluency.

The results reveal that, in terms of different types of writings, the translation of the science article is of the best quality, the quality of the literature translation is inferior, and the news translation is the poorest.

In addition, the two online translation tools differ in their outputs as well. On the whole, the output of Google Translate is superior to that of Babel Fish Translate. In the translation of news item, science articles and the literature work, the output produced by Google Translate covers almost all the information of the original text with little missing translation, and the output is readable. Comparatively speaking, the translation quality of Babel Fish Translate is much lower. The information is not completely covered, and some rare words, phrases and technical terms are not properly translated. Additionally, there are many missing translations and unidiomatic expressions that do not conform to the Chinese norms.

These findings will be helpful to the choice and use of online translation tools.
